Single and Multiple Implants Explained

A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone in the position of a missing tooth. Over a healing period of several months, the titanium integrates with the surrounding bone — a process called osseointegration — creating a stable, bone-anchored foundation onto which a crown, bridge, or other prosthesis can be secured.

A single implant replaces one missing tooth. It consists of the implant post, an abutment (a connector piece), and a custom-made crown that matches the surrounding teeth in colour and shape. This approach avoids the need to involve adjacent healthy teeth, which would be required for a traditional bridge.

Multiple implants are used when more than one tooth is missing. In some cases, individual implants are placed for each missing tooth. In others — particularly when a full arch of teeth is missing — a smaller number of implants can support a larger fixed bridge or prosthesis, such as in All-on-4 or All-on-6 treatment.

Who May Be a Candidate for Implants?

Implant suitability is determined by a combination of clinical factors. Not everyone with missing teeth is immediately suitable — some may require preparatory treatment before implants can be considered.

Generally, suitable candidates have sufficient jawbone volume to support an implant, healthy gum tissue with no active infection or periodontal disease, and good general health. Certain medical conditions and medications can affect healing and osseointegration, making a full health assessment essential before treatment planning.

Age is also a consideration — implants are typically not placed until jawbone development is complete, which is usually in early adulthood. There is no upper age limit, though individual health factors apply.

Favourable candidacy factors typically include:

Sufficient bone height and width at the implant site
No active gum (periodontal) disease
Good general health and healing capacity
Non-smoker or willingness to stop smoking around surgery
Controlled blood sugar levels in diabetic patients
Commitment to long-term oral hygiene and maintenance

Important: Only a qualified clinician can assess your suitability. This list is educational and not diagnostic.

Why a CT Scan Matters Before Implant Planning

A cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan — often called a 3D dental X-ray — provides a three-dimensional image of the jawbone, revealing bone height, width, and density at the precise location of a missing tooth. This information is essential for accurate implant planning.

A standard flat (2D) dental X-ray cannot provide sufficient detail for safe implant placement. Without 3D imaging, a clinician cannot accurately assess the proximity of structures such as the inferior alveolar nerve or the floor of the maxillary sinus — both of which must be taken into account when planning implant position and length.

Before committing to any implant treatment plan, confirm with the clinic that a CT scan is included in or will precede the planning process. A clinic that quotes or commits to a treatment plan without 3D imaging warrants caution.

Questions to ask: Will a CT scan be taken before finalising my treatment plan? Is the cost of the scan included in the quoted price?

Understanding the Implant Treatment Timeline

Dental implant treatment is a multi-stage process that spans several months. Understanding the stages helps you plan realistically.

01

Consultation & Imaging

A thorough clinical assessment is conducted, including a CT scan and dental photographs. Bone quality, quantity, and the health of surrounding teeth and gums are evaluated. A treatment plan is developed and discussed with you.

02

Preparatory Treatment (if required)

If bone grafting, tooth extractions, or gum disease treatment is needed, these are carried out first. Each type of preparatory treatment has its own healing period before implant placement can proceed.

03

Implant Placement

The titanium implant post is surgically placed into the jawbone under local anaesthesia. The site is sutured, and a healing period of three to six months begins to allow osseointegration (bone-to-implant integration).

04

Healing & Integration

During this period, the bone gradually grows around the implant, anchoring it in place. You may have a temporary restoration fitted during this time. A follow-up assessment confirms successful integration.

05

Abutment & Final Restoration

Once integration is confirmed, the abutment is placed and impressions or digital scans are taken for the final crown or prosthesis. The laboratory fabricates the restoration, which is then fitted and adjusted for comfort and bite.

Implants vs Dentures: A Factual Overview

Factor Dental Implants Dentures
Fixed or Removable Fixed — does not come out Removable — taken out for cleaning
Bone Integration Yes — anchored in bone No — sits on gum surface
Bone Preservation Stimulates bone, helping preserve it Does not stimulate bone; bone may continue to resorb
Stability High — functions like a natural tooth Can move during eating and speaking
Feels Natural Close to natural tooth feel Can feel bulky or loose over time
Treatment Complexity Surgical; multi-stage; longer timeline Non-surgical; quicker to fit
Lifespan Implants can last many years with care Dentures require relining/replacement periodically

This comparison is educational. Your clinician will discuss the most appropriate option for your individual situation.

What Affects the Cost of Dental Implants in Turkey?

Implant costs vary considerably. Understanding the contributing factors helps you ask the right questions when comparing quotes.

Number of Implants

The primary cost driver. Each implant post is priced individually, so the total scales directly with how many implants are required.

Implant Brand and Materials

Implant systems vary in quality and longevity. Well-established international brands typically carry a higher price than lesser-known alternatives, but offer documented clinical evidence.

Bone Condition

If bone grafting is needed before or during implant placement, this adds to the total cost and extends the treatment timeline. The need for grafting is only determined after imaging.

Crown or Prosthesis Type

The restoration placed on the implant — whether a single crown, bridge, or full-arch prosthesis — varies in cost depending on material and complexity.

Diagnostics Included

Confirm whether the CT scan, clinical photographs, and any pre-treatment assessments are included in the quoted price or charged separately.

Travel and Accommodation

Implant treatment requires multiple visits over time. Budget for at least two trips: one for placement and one for the final restoration, in addition to accommodation and transfers.

Questions to Ask a Clinic Before Committing to Implants

01

Which implant brand and system will be used, and what is the clinical evidence behind it?

02

Will a CT scan be taken before the treatment plan is finalised?

03

Is bone grafting likely to be needed, and if so, what is the expected impact on timeline and cost?

04

How many visits will be required, and what is the realistic total timeline from start to finish?

05

What is included in the quoted price — does it cover the implant, abutment, crown, CT scan, and follow-up?

06

What happens if the implant fails or requires review after I return to the UK?
