Dental Treatment in Turkey: Checklist Before You Book

A practical checklist covering every stage — from requesting your first quote, to choosing a clinic, to what to bring to your appointment and what to do when you return to the UK.

How to Use This Checklist

Planning dental treatment abroad involves more steps than booking a local appointment. This checklist breaks the process into five stages — from your initial research to aftercare at home — so you can approach each stage methodically and reduce the risk of overlooking something important. Not every item will apply to every patient or treatment type, but reviewing the full list helps ensure you've covered the key bases.

Stage 1: Before Requesting a Quote

Work through these steps before reaching out to any clinic:

  • Visit your UK dentist first. Get a current clinical assessment and ask for up-to-date dental X-rays. This gives you an independent view of your dental health and documentation to share with a clinic abroad.
  • Be clear about what you want and why. Know whether you are seeking cosmetic improvement, restorative treatment, tooth replacement, or a combination. The more specific your request, the more useful the quotes you receive.
  • Research treatment types. Understand the basics of the procedure you're considering — whether it's veneers, crowns, implants, or All-on-4 — so you can evaluate proposals intelligently.
  • Prepare good photographs of your teeth. A front smile, upper and lower arch photos, and any close-ups of specific concerns all help clinics give more accurate, personalised quotes.
  • Gather existing X-rays or imaging. If you have recent dental X-rays or a CT scan, locate digital copies to share with clinics when requesting quotes.

Stage 2: Before Choosing a Clinic

Once you have received one or more quotes, evaluate each clinic carefully:

  • Verify dentist qualifications. Ask for the name and qualifications of the clinician who will carry out your treatment. Research their credentials independently where possible.
  • Request a written treatment plan. Any quote should be accompanied by a written plan specifying tooth numbers, treatment type, and materials. Do not proceed without this document.
  • Confirm diagnostics are included. Ask whether X-rays, CT scans, or other diagnostics are conducted as part of the process. A plan built without diagnostic imaging is not a clinically complete plan.
  • Ask about aftercare. Understand the clinic's policy for UK patients who have concerns after returning home. Is a remote consultation available? What is covered if minor adjustments are needed?
  • Check independent reviews. Look for patient feedback on independent platforms. Seek reviews that describe the clinical experience in detail, not just the visual result.

Stage 3: Before Booking Travel

Once you have chosen a clinic and received a written treatment plan:

  • Confirm the treatment plan in writing before booking flights. Ensure all elements — treatment scope, materials, pricing, appointment schedule — are confirmed and documented.
  • Check travel insurance covers dental complications. Standard travel insurance often excludes dental treatment. Look for a policy that includes cover for complications arising from elective dental procedures abroad.
  • Plan for multiple visits if needed. Implant treatment, and some complex restorative cases, require more than one trip. Budget for travel and accommodation for each visit.
  • Confirm the appointment schedule in advance. Know how many appointments are required, how long each visit needs to be, and what the timeline is for the full treatment course.
  • Plan post-treatment recovery time. Some procedures require a period of healing. Arrange your travel so you have adequate time in Turkey and allow for any recovery time needed before flying home.

Stage 4: Before Your Appointment

In the days before you travel or attend your first appointment:

  • Bring your X-rays and any relevant dental records. Have digital copies accessible on your phone or tablet and, where possible, printed copies as backup.
  • Bring a list of current medications. Include prescribed medications, supplements, and any blood-thinning agents, as these can affect dental procedures and healing.
  • Re-read your written treatment plan. Go into your appointment knowing exactly what has been agreed, so you can flag any discrepancies or ask questions if something changes.
  • Prepare your questions. Write down any outstanding clinical questions — about the procedure, the materials, the timeline, or aftercare — so you don't forget them in the appointment.

Stage 5: After Returning to the UK

Your responsibilities don't end when you fly home:

  • Inform your UK dentist. Let your regular dentist know what treatment you received and share any clinical documentation from the clinic, including the treatment record and materials used.
  • Follow all aftercare instructions. Adhere to the post-treatment care instructions provided by your Turkish clinic — particularly for implants and crowns, where the healing period is important.
  • Attend scheduled UK dental check-ups. Regular monitoring by your UK dentist allows any concerns to be identified early and treated promptly.
  • Contact the treating clinic promptly if concerns arise. Don't wait if you experience persistent pain, sensitivity, or anything that doesn't feel right. Reputable clinics can advise remotely and, where necessary, arrange a review visit.
  • Keep all treatment documentation. Store the written treatment plan, materials specifications, and any clinic communications in a safe place. This information is important for any future dental work that builds on what was done in Turkey.
